My Trip to New York by Emily

Last week, to celebrate my recent unemployment, I headed east to New York City. It was my first trip to the Big Apple and here are some pictures from it.

This is in Grand Central Station. If you stand in the corner of this area of the station, you can clearly hear the person in the opposite corner talking. By the way, this was probably the cleanest train station I've ever been to. I can't think of any other station that I would dare lean against a corner for fear pee residue and other scary things.
Below is proof that there are alligators in the sewers. This subway station was covered with these small statues.

Me giving Lady Liberty a kiss on the cheek.

NYPD was everywhere. I think I saw more policemen on one block than we have in the whole state of Colorado. Craziness. But they were convenient for asking directions.

At the Statue of Liberty I asked this man to take our picture. While the pedestal was beautiful, we kind of were hoping for the statue to be in the shot as well.

Okay, so during all my years of elementary school, I ordered books from Scholastic. We found a Scholastic store! It was amazing, I didn't know such a place even existed. Shauna and Mom are hanging with Harry in this shot in the lobby of the store.
"It was THIS big!"
We were lucky enough to be in town during Fleet Week. The U.S.S. Iwo Jima and the U.S.S. Roosevelt were in town, so the place was crawling with Sailors. They opened up the ships to the public. We went on the Iwo Jima, an aircraft carrier. It was enormous, as illustrated above by Shauna.
Inside the Daily News building is this globe. This is the news building that the Daily Planet from Superman was based on. The guards told us that in the movie, when they show Superman flying around the planet in space, they actually had him swinging around this globe.

This is at the Fire Station across the street from the World Trade Center. We were admiring the firemen, I mean firetrucks. whoops, silly me.

The Brooklyn Bridge. Definetely worth walking on to.
My mom is in the corner here.

The Smithsonian Native American Museum is in the old Customs building. The architecture was beautiful. This is one of the staircases.

This is me doing a little steer wrestling.

Shauna and I went to Ellis Island. As far as we know, none of our ancestors stepped foot on the island, so we pretended they had. This is a wall with the names of all the immigrants who came through Ellis Island.

Shauna and Mom in front of the New York Public Library. You may recognize this from such movies as: The Day After Tomorrow.
We rode the Staten Island Ferry on Sunday. The decks were pretty crowded, but there was plenty of seating inside.

Shauna and Mom in front of Ground Zero. It was a sobering visit.

On top of the Empire State Building. You may recognize this from such movies as: Sleepless in Seattle.

All in all, it was a great trip. We did a ton of walking and saw a ton of stuff. The city was beautiful and everyone was really nice and friendly. People were always going out of their way to help us, I was impressed (No Dad, they weren't trying to pickpocket us).

We also went and saw Guys and Dolls. It had that lady in it from Gilmore Girls.

Inside the Empire State Building.

If you notice the life boat on the Staten Island Ferry only held four people. Did they learn nothing from Leo and Kate?

At first I thought this was odd, but then I remembered I was in central park and had minutes before seen a man dancing around in a loin cloth. Note: when a man in a loin cloth spins around, look away.

And yes, we did finally get the Statue in our picture.

Hahaha, Emily, that was such a great account of your trip. I wish you would post more often because your posts are so entertaining. Did you go to the Family History Center at Ellis Island and see the missionaries? That was in my mission (although I never served on the island). And the Scholastic Bookstore looks awesome.

Very cool Em. Is it a requirement to be good looking to be a fireman in NYC? Just curious. ;)
